Chase Kennedy – Girl in the Garden

I shot the beautiful Chase Kennedy in the Leaning Pines Arboretum on Cal Poly’s campus last weekend.

I’ve been wanting to shoot in these gardens because they are very unique to our area. Most of the plants are exotic and from other continents so I though they would provide a captivating set. The center of the gardens look very European with a maze of bushes and fountain in the middle.

Chase was the perfect subject. Not only was she tall and beautiful, but she looks good on camera from pretty much every angle. She also has a very unique look, like the scenery of the garden. I wanted to get some action shots of her walking and her height (6’3) allowed me to get some great video.

For video, we strictly shot with a handheld SLR gimbal and Canon 5D III. All video was shot using a Canon 16-55mm L v2. We had Peter playing the part of the dolly and I was on remote camera.

The lighting was crucial for the still photos. Without light modifiers I wouldn’t have been able to achieve the look I was going for. I used a 5 ft. octobox and a 4×1 strip with the Bowens 500W strobes. I wanted to use a beauty dish but didn’t get the chance to. We needed portable power so I used one Photogenic Ion. It provides an impressive amount of power for two strobes. My only complaint is the recycle time. I shot the stills with a 50mm L lens mainly because of the lack of artificial light. Having two additional strobes would’ve added light to the background areas, allowing a more interesting wide angle shot.

I wanted the video to look very smooth and fashionable. The gimbal is very easy to use and the stability that it provides is amazing.

I went for an edgier look for the stills. I underexposed the garden and gave Chase high key in order to achieve this look.

There were a couple things I wish we had brought. Some dramatic red lipstick would’ve added some great color contrast. I also wish we had brought a blanket to keep Chase warm between shoots – I can see goosebumps in some of the shots if you zoom in really close.

Other than that, it was a fun shoot. I’d like to thank Peter and Ashley for being a great crew and of course, Chase, for being the perfect subject.
